A Maestro Card incorporates a Maestro debit card, guarantees cheques and gives you access to your cash from ATMs at home and abroad.
We have 3 types of debit card : Maestro Debit, Maestro and Maestro Premium.
How does it work?
The Maestro Card is a debit card that cleverly combines the convenience of cash with the security of a card. You can pay for a wide range of goods and services without cheques or the need to withdraw cash from ATMs, provided you are within your account balance or any agreed overdraft facility.
Where you see the Maestro sign, you can use your card to pay for goods. Your card is electronically read at a terminal and the amount you have spent is automatically debited from your current account, normally within 3 working days.
A Worldwide Welcome
Maestro allows you to pay for goods and services at home and abroad at over 7 million outlets displaying the Maestro logo (provided you are within your account balance or any agreed overdraft facility). Additional charges will be levied for Maestro transactions generated outside the UK *.
*International Maestro transactions are converted using the MasterCard exchange rate adjusted by adding a commission of 2.75% of the transaction value
Cash in hand
You can withdraw cash at over 40,000 ATMs throughout the UK and Ireland and at over 600,000 ATMs worldwide displaying the Maestro Card symbol (provided you are within your account balance or any agreed overdraft facility and subject to the daily limit on your card). You can also get up to £50 by way of cash back (a cash withdrawal from your account) when using your card to pay for purchases at many stores, mostly supermarkets.
Northern will not charge you for ATM withdrawals as long as you do not go overdrawn. Other financial institutions may charge for the use of their ATMs.
Flexible spending
A Maestro Card allows you to purchase goods over the Internet, over the telephone and by mail order.
A Cheque Guarantee Card
The Maestro Card can also be used to guarantee cheques up to £100 or £250 depending on which account package you have.
Automated Teller Machines (ATM)
You can obtain the following services at Northern ATMs using your Maestro Card:
- Cash
- Balance Enquiry
- PIN Change
- Mini Statement
In addition you can check your account balance at any LINK branded ATMs in the UK.
Card Security Advice
- Always keep your card and chequebook separately and in a safe place.
- Memorise your PIN and never write it down.
- Never tell anyone your PIN - even the Bank or Police.
- Ensure that no-one can see you input your PIN at ATMs.
- Check your statements regularly.
Lost or stolen cards
If your card is lost or stolen, or if the PIN has become known to another person, telephone us as soon as possible on 0870 850 2481**, or alternatively you can call in person at any Northern branch. If outside the United Kingdom, lost or stolen cards can be reported to Northern Card Services on 0044 2890 049201** (24 hour service).
