Teaching children basic financial literacy skills we hope will help them to become financially responsible adults.

moneyville

Northern Bank has 2 Financial Literacy initiatives for children:

Moneyville (5-10 year olds) Money Talks (11-16 year olds)

Moneyville

In 2008 Northern Bank launched the Moneyville website *, an innovative, non-commercial, educational website for children, with two games for 5-7 year and 8-10 year olds.

5-7 year-olds

In Moneyville, 5-7 year-olds can learn about the value of money and about earning, saving, spending and prioritising.

While playing, children complete various fun, educational tasks to earn money and make their own decisions about how they want to spend or save it.

A diploma is received upon completion of this game.

8-10 year olds

In 2009 Moneyville was extended to include a new 'family' game which helps 8-10 year olds learn about day to day family budgeting and making decisions about family purchases.

By creating a virtual family, children are given the chance to experiment on how to get their income and expenses to balance, by choosing their home, whether they will drive a car or bicycles or what type of pet they can afford to look after.

Children also have to make decisions on how to prioritise their spending or whether to save up, so that the family can pay their bills each month, take holidays or have family days out.

For Parents

Children can enjoy playing Moneyville on their own, but we encourage parents to introduce the game and discuss it with their children. The parents’ section provides tips and advice on how to teach children about money.

Money Talks

Money Talks, an award-winning partnership with Citizens Advice *, endorsed by CCEA *, supports the teaching of personal finance in the curriculum.

Money Talks is aimed at youth workers and teachers working with young people aged 11-16.

The Money Talks kit includes brand new media resources and updated materials, including a DVD drama, an interactive money management PC game and practical money management activities.
