IT security precautions
Make sure you install an antivirus program that scans for viruses in the files stored on the company's computer. Update the program regularly to ensure continual protection against new viruses. Set up your antivirus program to automatically check for viruses when you download files from the Internet.
Install a firewall to protect against hackers. A firewall can also catch viruses known as worms. A worm typically exploits a previously unknown security loophole in your programs.
Be cautious about opening emails. If you do not know the sender or receive an unexpected email, you should consider deleting the email without opening it first. Be especially cautious about opening emails with attached files, as well as emails with odd names or emails in a language other than English.
Be aware of false virus warnings, also known as hoaxes. A hoax will often tell you how to erase a file that should be on your PC. A typical subject for a false warning is "virus warning".
Think carefully before giving out personal information on the Internet or by email. Send only encrypted confidential information and only to people you know.
Download programs only from known and credible websites. Never open programs directly. Instead, save them on your hard drive and have your antivirus program check them before you open them.
Use a password and keep it secret. Never use names or birthdays as passwords; instead, use a combination of letters, digits and signs. We recommend that you change your password regularly.
If your software supplier offers security updates, we recommend that you have your PC updated periodically. Remember to keep your operating system updated too.
If you are using a wireless network, be aware that others can tap into your computer. Therefore remember to activate the encryption key before using the wireless network.
Turn off your PC when not in use to avoid being connected to the Internet for longer than necessary.
