Northern Bank offer a range of Maestro debit cards and MasterCard or Visa credit cards.
You can choose between a selection of different debit or credit cards. To help you select the most appropriate card for your needs it is important to appreciate the difference between a debit and a credit card.
Credit card
A credit card is a form of borrowing. If your application is accepted Northern Bank will set you a credit limit (the amount you can borrow). You will be sent a statement each month showing how much you have spent, the amount that you have to pay back and the date by which this needs to be paid (the Payment Due Date). Interest is charged on any money you still owe (the outstanding balance) after the Payment Due Date.
A credit card gives you the freedom to buy things now and pay later however, in the case of cash withdrawals, interest is charged from the transaction date and not from the Payment Due Date.
Debit card
A debit card is a payment card linked to a current account and used to pay for goods and services by taking the money directly from your account. A debit card can sometimes be used as a cash card for getting cash from cash machines.
Choosing a card
Maestro debit cards and MasterCard credit cards can only be opened as part of a Northern Bank Package.
A Northern Bank Visa credit card however is available without opening a Northern Bank Package.
