Assets are in general terms anything that you own that is of value, including your home or even a piece of fine artwork or jewellery. Asset classes are the types of asset a fund invests in. They are the building blocks of investment and can include investments in Cash, Bonds and Equities.

The sections below provide basic descriptions of the different asset classes together with the potential advantages and disadvantages of each.

 

When we talk about ‘cash’ in investment terms, we mean money that is invested in banks, building societies and other organisations to produce interest.

  • Easy to understand
  • Provides easy access to your money

Potential Disadvantages
  • Returns can be eroded by inflation
  • Usually produces more modest returns than other asset classes over the longer term
