You should never supply personal data such as name, address, date of birth, personal identification number or account numbers via e-mail or to websites. If you want to e-mail us, you can use our secure e-mail functions in eBanking and our other email facilities on our Northern Bank website contact page.*
But what if you know the recipient?
We will never request you via e-mail to disclose any personal information.
It may be ok to disclose personal data if you are sure that the recipients encryption is secure.
How do you verify the data in the recipient’s certificate?
If you can send an encrypted e-mail to someone, you will be able to check their data in the certificate you receive from them. Precisely how you do this depends on your e-mail program. This information will typically be available from your program’s online help.
How do you check that a line is encrypted?
The address line in your browser must show "https" instead of "http" or there should be a special icon on your screen. The appearance of the icon depends on your browser. If you double-click the icon, you can check the certificate.
Phishing - fraudsters try to access your personal data
“Phishing” means that fraudsters try to get personal data from you, using bogus websites or e-mails apparently originating from a well-known company. Bogus sites are designed to scam you into supplying sensitive information. It is simple to avoid: Never disclose your password, personal details or account number to anyone.
